Secure Login
----------
Beginning December 2, 2003, Alisar Charting users will have the option
to log in from our homepage to their charts using the Standard Login or
the new "Banking-Grade" Secure Login.
Standard Login protects your charts with a username and password, but a
determined hacker could eavesdrop on the text of your charts as they
pass across the Internet. To put this in perspective, almost all
personal e-mail,and much corporate e-mail is sent in the same
unprotected way - clear text.
Using the new Secure Login gives you to same level of protection offered
by most online banking sites. The SSL protocol used in the Secure Login
means that anyone trying to eavesdrop on your chart information will
find a baffling soup of encrypted symbols.
Which should I choose?
-------------------------------
Here's a question: Would you send the text of a chart in an e-mail? If
yes, then Standard Login is perfectly adequate. If not, Secure Login
should be used every time you connect to a database with sensitive data. Additionally, think twice about e-mailing the plain text of your chart to a colleague.
So... why not use Secure Login all the time? Since SSL encrypts data before sending it, and decrypts each page as it arrives, a slight difference in performance may be noticed. But good news! In testing, users with DSL or Cable modems saw almost no difference.
Bottom line: as with e-mail and banking transactions, each user must determine how sensitive their information is, and act accordingly to secure it.
How do I use the Secure login?
-------------------------------
Using the Secure Login is as simple as using the Standard Login! When logging in from www.alisarcharting.com, simply use the "Secure Login" menu item for secure login and the "Standard Login" menu item for standard login.
If you login from the direct URL of your database (for instance, when you receive a notification from the system), you can switch your standard connection to secure by simply adding an "s" to the "http" part of your URL in your address window.
For example, a URL that reads:
is made secure with:
Note: Be sure to click the enter key or use the browser "Go" button AFTER you have added the "s" to load the page with the secure login.
Once I am logged in, how do I know if my connection is secure or standard?
-------------------------------
First, make sure that the "Status Bar" menu item is checked under the "View Menu". When logged in under a secure connection, notice the small yellow lock in the lower corner of your browser window (on the right for the PC, on the left for the Mac). Double clicking this lock will display the Alisar Charting SSL certificate and verifies that this certificate is safe. If this symbol is present, you are logged in with a secure connection using the SSL protocol.
Under a Standard login, this lock symbol is NOT present.
Can I still use the Standard Login?
-------------------------------
The two methods are completely interchangeable. You decide which to use each login.

Alisar Charting - holiday planner???
From personal experience, we can tell our readers that Alisar Charting is a wonderful way to create the kind of event you WANT to remember. Now, not every Thanksgiving of ours has been a cherished memory. There was the time the free-range turkey was so tough we entered it in a bodybuilding competition. We have also suspected more than once that our teens didn't always embrace social visits with grandparents...
A week before the event, we worked with our two teenage boys to lay out what we wanted, and why, listened to what would make it a fun time for them.
As a result, we created a delightful three-generation Thanksgiving celebration, complete with two wonderfully supportive young gentlemen!
Here are a few suggestions:
Include the family as you chart out your End Result. What are the qualities of the holiday season that are important to EACH member of the family? As you look back at this holiday season, how will you each know that it was the event you wanted?
When the chart is drafted, print it out and post where the family can see the actions and schedule. Review the progress, and celebrate success! This is a great way to teach you family about creating the results they want!!!
